The finish that makes a kit look finished. Straight from the box, a model's surfaces don't match — some runners come out glossier than others, painted areas sit at a different sheen from bare plastic, and panel lining and decals each reflect their own way. Semi-gloss pulls all of it into one consistent surface, and that single step does more for how a build reads than almost anything else you can spray. It's why so many Gunpla builders default to it.

It's also the honest sheen. Very little in the real world is mirror-bright or chalk-flat — vehicles in service, moulded plastic, painted metal and worn equipment all sit somewhere in between, which is exactly where this lands. And unlike a dead flat coat, it keeps enough light on the surface to hold your shading and contours instead of scattering them into a uniform grey. Being water-based, it does all that without touching what's underneath: acrylics, lacquers, waterslide decals, Gundam markers and clear parts all come through intact, with none of the crazing or lifting a lacquer clear risks.

  • Unifies mismatched sheens across plastic, paint, decals and lining
  • Realistic in-service finish — the default choice for Gunpla
  • Holds shading and contour that a flat coat would swallow
  • Water-based: safe over acrylics, lacquers, decals and clear parts
  • Less prone to frosting than a flat coat

How to use it: Shake it properly and warm the can in hand-hot water first — water-based clears spit when cold or under-mixed, and speckle on a finished model is a miserable way to end a build. Let the paint underneath cure fully, especially over enamel washes, then build thin coats rather than one heavy pass.

Tip: Spray the whole model, not just the painted parts. The value of semi-gloss on a partly-painted kit is consistency, and that only works if everything gets the same coat — bare plastic included.

Which one do I need? Semi-gloss (B-502) for a realistic, finished look and for unifying mixed surfaces — the safe default if you're undecided. Gloss (B-501) for shine, maximum protection, and as the base under decals and washes. Flat (B-503) for military subjects and anything that must not reflect. Choose Top Coat over Mr. Super Clear whenever decals, clear parts or delicate paint are in play.
