Flat without the chalk. The problem with most matt clears is texture — the flattening agents that kill the shine also leave a faint roughness, so a finished model looks flat but feels like fine sandpaper, and under strong light it can read slightly dusty rather than genuinely matte. Super Smooth Clear is Mr. Hobby's answer to that: a flat lacquer that goes off fine, even and silky, with the reflection gone but the surface still smooth to the touch.

That matters most where the eye lingers. Figure faces, painted skin and cloth, smooth vehicle panels, anything with careful blending — a coarse flat coat quietly flattens all of it into one dusty tone, while a fine one leaves the work intact. It's a lacquer, so you also get real durability underneath the softness of the finish: hard-wearing enough for models that get handled, not just admired. 170ml.

  • Fine, even flat finish — no chalky or dusty texture
  • Keeps blends and detail readable where coarse matt coats flatten them
  • Lacquer hardness for models that get handled
  • Silky to the touch as well as flat to the eye
  • 170ml can

Read this before you spray it.

  • Not recommended over water-based paints — Mr. Hobby's guidance for the solvent range. Use a water-based top coat over acrylics, or test on a spare part and mist first.
  • Never on clear parts. Lacquer crazes canopies and visors.
  • Watch the humidity. Flat clears are the most frost-prone of all finishes — a sticky, humid day is how a model ends up chalky white. Wait for a dry one, warm the can, and build thin coats.
  • Ventilation is not optional. Spray booth or outdoors, respirator on.

Tip: Flat coats show up heavy application more than any other finish. Three light passes will give you a smoother, more even flat than one wet one — and a wet flat coat tends to dry patchy, glossy in the recesses where it pooled and flat on the high points, which is the exact opposite of what you wanted.

Which one do I need? Super Smooth Clear Flat when surface quality matters — figures, faces, smooth panels, display pieces. Mr. Super Clear Semi-Gloss (B-516) for a realistic in-service sheen and as a barrier coat before weathering. Mr. Top Coat (B-501/B-502) when the paint underneath is water-based or clear parts rule lacquer out.
