The water-based coat that stopped being the soft option. The trade-off with aqueous top coats has always been safety versus toughness — mild enough to spray over decals and clear parts without a second thought, but a lacquer would always outlast them. Premium Top Coat closes most of that gap: Mr. Hobby have improved the film strength over their conventional water-based coating, so it resists scratching considerably better while keeping everything that made the water-based line worth using.

That safety is engineered rather than incidental. It's formulated specifically not to attack painted surfaces — Aqueous Hobby Color, Acrysion and Mr. Color are all accounted for — so it goes over your paintwork, waterslide decals and Gundam markers without lifting, softening or crazing. The film itself is clearer and deeper than the standard line, which shows: colours underneath read richer rather than slightly veiled. In semi-gloss it does the job most builds want, pulling mismatched sheens across paint, bare plastic, decals and panel lining into one consistent, realistic surface.

  • Stronger, more scratch-resistant film than standard water-based top coat
  • Formulated not to attack Mr. Color, Aqueous Hobby Color or Acrysion
  • Safe over waterslide decals, markers and clear parts
  • Greater clarity and depth — colours stay rich, not veiled
  • Realistic semi-gloss sheen that unifies mixed surfaces

How to use it: Shake thoroughly and warm the can in hand-hot water — water-based clears spit when cold or under-mixed. Let the paint underneath cure fully, especially over enamel washes, then build thin coats rather than one wet pass. Spray the whole model, not just the painted parts; consistency is the point of a semi-gloss coat.

Standard or Premium? Both are water-based and both are safe over decals and clear parts. Premium (B-602) is worth the difference on anything that gets handled — action-posed kits, models that travel to shows, pieces you'll be picking up regularly — because the tougher film is the whole upgrade. For a display piece behind glass, standard Top Coat (B-502) does the same job for less.

Which finish do I need? Semi-gloss for a realistic finished look and for unifying mixed surfaces — the safe default. Premium Top Coat is also made in gloss and flat. If you need maximum hardness and your model has no clear parts or delicate decals, a lacquer such as Mr. Super Clear (B-516) is harder still — at the cost of everything above.
