Shine is the thing that gives scale away. A 1/35 tank with a sheen on it reads as a model of a tank; the same tank dead flat reads as steel. Matt varnish is what closes that gap — it kills reflection, unifies everything underneath into a single surface, and lets your paintwork and weathering do the talking instead of the light.

It's also the coat that makes decals disappear. Even a well-applied decal leaves a faint film edge that catches light at the wrong angle; a matt coat over the top erases it, so markings look painted on rather than stuck on. Same for washes and weathering, which end up with mismatched sheens that a final matt coat pulls into one consistent finish. Being water-based acrylic — toluene-free, CFC-free — it goes over acrylic paint without attacking it, and it's mild enough in odour to use indoors where a lacquer clear would drive you out of the room. 400ml is enough to finish a lot of models.

  • Dead flat finish — the realistic choice at any scale
  • Hides decal film edges so markings look painted on
  • Unifies mismatched sheens from washes and weathering
  • Water-based acrylic: safe over acrylic paints, low odour, toluene-free
  • 400ml can — plenty for units, armies and large subjects

How to use it — and the one warning that matters. Matt varnish is the finish that can frost or bloom, going chalky white instead of clear. It's almost always humidity plus a heavy coat. So: make sure the paint underneath is fully dry, warm the can in hand-hot water first, and apply fine coats about 30 minutes apart rather than one wet pass. And don't varnish on a humid summer afternoon — if it's sticky outside, wait for a dry evening or run a fan. Water-based acrylics like this are far more forgiving than solvent lacquers here, but the physics still applies.

The trick most miniature painters use: matt is the finish you want, but gloss is the tougher coat. So do both — a coat or two of Gloss Varnish (28.530) for real durability, then this over the top to kill the shine. Best of both, and it's the single biggest thing you can do to stop tabletop models wearing at the edges.

Which finish do I need? Matt for realistic scale models, miniatures, military subjects and anything that shouldn't reflect. Gloss (28.530) for cars, display pieces, and as the base under decals and panel-line washes. Many builds use gloss first and matt last.
