The coat that makes a model look like one finished object. Before varnishing, a build is a patchwork of sheens — painted areas, decals, panel lining, the touch-up you did on the fender, bare plastic where you scraped a seam. Each catches light differently, and the eye reads that as unfinished no matter how good the painting is. A flat coat erases all of it, which is why military modellers reach for it last on every build.

Mr. Hobby make a specific point of it: this coat evens out the sheen difference between paint and decals so markings stop looking stuck on, and it blends the transitions between camouflage colours and any minor touch-ups you'd rather nobody noticed. Being water-based, it does that without endangering the work underneath — no lifting decals, no softening paint, safe over acrylics and safe on bare plastic and clear parts. Low odour too, so it's usable indoors when a lacquer clear isn't.

  • Dead flat finish — the standard final coat for military subjects
  • Eliminates sheen differences between paint, decals and touch-ups
  • Blends camouflage transitions into one convincing surface
  • Water-based: safe over decals, acrylics and clear parts
  • Low odour, usable indoors

Two things that go wrong with flat coats, and how to avoid both:

Apply it heavily and it dries glossy. This surprises people, but it's Mr. Hobby's own warning — flood a flat coat and the matting agents sink while the carrier pools on top, and you end up with the shine you were trying to remove. Thin passes, always.

Spray it in humidity and it frosts. Flat clears are the most prone of any finish to going chalky white. Warm the can in hand-hot water, wait for a dry day, and build up in light coats. Water-based is far more forgiving here than a lacquer, but the physics still applies.

Tip: Let the paint underneath cure properly first, particularly over enamel washes and oil weathering. Touch-dry isn't cured, and a top coat over a wash that hasn't fully gone off can bloom or go patchy days later.

Which one do I need? Flat (B-503) for military subjects, realistic finishes and anything that shouldn't reflect. Semi-gloss (B-502) for an in-service sheen and the general-purpose choice. Gloss (B-501) for shine and as the base under decals and washes. If you want a tougher, scratch-resistant film in the same water-based safety, look at Premium Top Coat (B-603 flat).
