The Fairey Fulmar Mk.II was a British carrier-borne fighter and reconnaissance aircraft that served with the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm during World War II. First flown in 1937 and introduced into service in 1940, the Fulmar was based on a light bomber design, giving it longer range and two-seat operation, which suited the Navy’s needs for fleet defense and patrol missions. Although slower and less agile than land-based fighters, the Fulmar proved reliable and effective in early naval campaigns, scoring more aerial victories than any other Fleet Air Arm aircraft during the war.
