This is the track British railways were built on. Bullhead rail — the rounded-profile rail seated in cast chairs and held by keys — was the standard permanent way of the steam age and beyond, and it survives on secondary routes and sidings to this day. Peco's Bullhead range reproduces it with the detail it deserves: fully-formed rail chairs, wood-grain timber sleepers, and accurate bullhead rail profile in nickel silver, supplied in flexible 914mm (36 inch) lengths.

True OO Proportions — The Realism Upgrade

Here's what sets the Bullhead range apart from all standard OO/HO track: the sleeper dimensions and spacing replicate correct 4mm (OO) scale, where conventional Streamline follows HO proportions. The gauge stays 16.5mm — all your stock runs as normal — but ballasted and weathered, this track simply looks British in a way HO-spaced track never quite manages. It's the upgrade OO modellers asked Peco for over decades, and the reason this range exists.

The Era Question, Answered Broadly

Bullhead is the natural choice for steam-era layouts — it's simply what the railway looked like — but its honest time span is far wider: chaired track lasted through the diesel transition and lingers in sidings and branches still. If your layout is set before the 1970s, or models the quieter corners of any later era, bullhead is right.

Compatibility and Joining

Code 75 nickel silver throughout, fully compatible with Peco's existing Code 75 range — mix it with flat-bottom Code 75 where your layout's story demands (bullhead branch, flat-bottom main line is a classic and correct combination) — and joined to Code 100 via the SL-113 transition track. The range has its own joiners: the SL-114 bullhead rail joiners, moulded with fishplate bolt detail to match the track's standard. The usual Code 75 note applies: some deep-flanged vintage models may bump on the chairs — modern RTR runs perfectly.
