Two jobs, one can. Vallejo's Hobby Paint Sprays combine a priming base with fully pigmented colour, so a single pass over bare plastic, metal or resin leaves you primed and based in white — no separate undercoat, no second product, no waiting between them. For anyone facing a tray of thirty miniatures on a Sunday afternoon, that halves the boring part.

White is the base that makes colour sing. Yellows, oranges and bright reds are semi-transparent and die over dark undercoats; over white they hit full saturation immediately. It's also the base that contrast and speed paints are designed for — Vallejo Xpress Color, and equivalents from other ranges, rely on a light primer to let the pigment pool and shade properly. Prime dark and those paints simply don't work. The finish is matt and self-levelling, laying down thin and even so it brings out fine detail rather than drowning it, and the shade is matched to Vallejo's Game Color and Model Color ranges, so you can spray a base and carry straight on with a brush in exactly the same white.

Tip: Shake it properly — a good minute, not a token rattle — and build in light passes from about 25-30cm. White is the least forgiving colour for over-application: a heavy coat will soften exactly the crisp detail you primed the model to show off. And do swap the nozzles rather than persevering with the wrong one; the fine nozzle on a tank hull is slow, the wide nozzle on a 28mm figure is a flood.

Which primer do I need? Choose white for bright colours, contrast and speed paints, and any scheme where you want maximum vibrancy. Vallejo also offer this spray in grey (28.011) as a neutral all-rounder and black (28.012) for dark schemes and fast shading. If you want a dedicated primer that fills and sands rather than a pigmented base coat, look at Tamiya's Surface Primer range instead — different tool for a different job.
