Two problems, one can. Bare resin and photo-etch present both at once: paint won't grip them, and the surface usually needs work as well. The standard answer is two products — an adhesion primer, then a surfacer over the top, with a wait in between and two cans on the bench. Mr. Primer Surfacer collapses that into a single pass.

It's built on Mr. Hobby's standard Surfacer 1000 with primer components blended in, so it does both jobs properly rather than compromising on either: it fills sanding scratches and faint seams like a surfacer should, and it bonds to resin, etched brass and metal parts the way a dedicated primer does. Same familiar 1000 grade, same grey that shows up flaws before you paint, same 170ml can. For a resin garage kit, a heavily detailed photo-etch build, or anything mixing styrene with brass and resin, this is the shortest route to a sound base.

  • Primer and surfacer in one — adhesion and filling from a single can
  • Grips resin, photo-etch and metal where plain surfacer struggles
  • Fills sanding scratches and seam lines as it goes
  • Grey base shows up flaws while there's still time to fix them
  • 170ml — one can covers a full mixed-media build

Still degrease first. The primer components make this far more forgiving than a plain surfacer, but they don't beat mould release agent, and resin kits are covered in it. Warm soapy water and a toothbrush, dry fully, handle by the edges. Skip that and no primer on the market will save the paint job.

When the two-step is still better: if you need serious filling, a coarser surfacer (500) followed by this one will do more than any single can. And if you specifically want a fine 1200 or 1500 finish under gloss, you'll get a better result priming for adhesion first with Mr. Primer (B-512) and then choosing your surfacer grade independently. This can is the efficient choice, not the maximum-control one.

Which one do I need? Choose B-524 for resin, photo-etch and mixed-media builds where you want adhesion and filling in one step. Choose plain Mr. Surfacer 1000 (B-519) for ordinary styrene kits — it's the cheaper route when adhesion was never the problem. Choose Mr. Primer (B-512) when you want adhesion only, with no filling and no colour change.
