Yellow is the colour that teaches painters patience. It's the weakest-covering pigment in any paint system — and knowing that is the difference between a crisp, glowing yellow and a streaky one. Humbrol No. 99 Lemon is the matt yellow of the classic enamel range: a clean, bright lemon for the jobs where yellow must read flat — trainer aircraft schemes, fuselage bands and theatre markings, high-visibility panels, wasp-striped machinery, and the countless small details on figures and railway stock that need brightness without shine. When a paint guide calls for "99", this is the tin.
The Yellow Trick
Here's the craft knowledge this tin rewards: lay yellow over a white or light undercoat. Every yellow — this one included — is semi-transparent by pigment nature, and over bare grey plastic or a dark base it will take coat after coat to build; over white, it sings in two. Humbrol's high-density pigment gives No. 99 better coverage than most, but the undercoat rule still turns a good result into a great one. Plan for it and yellow becomes one of the most satisfying colours on the bench rather than one of the most cursed.
Where Matt Yellow Earns Its Keep
Gloss yellows get the taxis and race cars; matt lemon gets the scale-realism work — WWII recognition bands and unit markings, trainer and target-tug schemes, construction and warning details on dioramas and machinery, and figure work from raincoats to sou'westers. As a mixer it brightens greens, warms whites, and pulls oranges toward citrus with the rest of the range.
Classic Solvent-Based Enamel
The traditional fast-drying Humbrol formula: strong pigment density, tough matt film, adhesion to most plastics, wood, glass, ceramics, metal, cardboard and sealed surfaces (test a small area first on anything unusual), with a 14ml tinlet covering roughly 0.3 square metres.
Brush or Airbrush
Brush straight from the tin — thin coats, always, and doubly for yellow, where a thick coat dries uneven and shows every brush mark. Airbrush thinned with Humbrol Enamel Thinners at 2 parts paint to 1 part thinner. Matt is touch dry in 20–40 minutes and hard dry within 24 hours; recoat after 6 hours minimum, preferably overnight. Clean up with Humbrol Enamel Thinners.
