Please note this is an unpowered model — on the prototype, the DVT is the driving cab from which the train is controlled when the Class 91 propels from the rear, and Hornby's model is likewise a free-rolling vehicle designed to lead your rake.

Metro-Cammell of Washwood Heath, Birmingham built 32 DVTs between 1989 and 1992 specifically for the InterCity 225 sets on the ECML. After the loss of one set in the Great Heck accident of 2001, the remaining sets were refurbished by Bombardier at Wakefield between 2003 and 2005, and again in 2016 before LNER took over the InterCity East Coast franchise from Virgin Trains East Coast in June 2018. Finished in LNER red and white, 82223 has been retained as part of ten sets providing backup to the front-line Class 800 'Azumas' — and it's still operational today.
