The primer most modellers reach for, and for good reason. Tamiya's light grey surface primer lays down an exceptionally fine, even base coat that grips polystyrene and metal alike, giving your top coats something consistent to sit on instead of bare plastic. The neutral grey does double duty: it evens out multi-colour sprues and mixed-media builds into a single tone, and it's dark enough to sit properly under strong colours without the chalkiness of a white primer.

The real value shows up before you paint. A light coat under raking light will find every seam you thought you'd cleaned, every ghost of a mould line, every sink mark — while they're still fixable. Sand, spot-prime, move on.

Tip: Warm the can in hand-hot water for a few minutes, shake for a good 30 seconds, and spray in light passes from around 25-30cm. Two thin coats beat one heavy one — flooding a lacquer primer onto bare styrene is how you lose detail.
