The usual reasons a rod needs renewing: a hydraulic lock from flooding or a prime gone wrong, a hard prop strike, or simple high-hours wear showing up as play at the big end. A bent rod can look perfectly straight while binding through part of its rotation, so if the engine has locked or struck, replace rather than hope. While the rod is out, inspect the piston pin and crankpin surfaces for scoring or bluing — damage there will take a new rod with it.

Fit with the oiling holes correctly oriented per the engine's assembly manual, and run in rich for the first tanks as with any bottom-end work.
