The finest-atomising primer in Tamiya's range, for the builds where a normal primer coat is already too much paint. On 1/72 and 1/144 aircraft, 1/700 ships, figure faces and delicate photo-etch, the margin between "primed" and "detail filled in" is measured in microns — engraved panel lines soften, mesh clogs, and crisply cast folds go doughy. Fine Surface Primer lays down a coat thin enough to leave all of that intact.

It's the same light grey, the same 180ml can and the same plastic-and-metal compatibility as the standard Surface Primer L — the difference is entirely in how finely it breaks up the paint. Expect a thinner, tighter, more even film that still sands wet or dry, and still takes Tamiya TS lacquers along with acrylic and enamel top coats.

Tip: Because each coat goes on thinner, the instinct is to compensate with a heavier pass — don't. Two or three genuinely light coats will get you there with the detail intact, where one wet pass undoes the entire reason you bought this can.

Which primer do I need? Fine isn't simply the better version — it's the right version for a different job. Choose Fine (87064) for small scales, figures, photo-etch and anything where surface detail is delicate. Choose the standard Surface Primer L (87042) when you want to build coverage faster and fill light sanding scratches, which the thicker film does better. For bright reds, yellows or pearls, go white (87044). For bare metal parts, you want Metal Primer (87061) underneath first.
