In 1976, the FIA introduced the new Group 5 category for “Special Production” cars, allowing manufacturers to significantly modify bodywork while retaining the original production shell width. This opened the door to aggressive aerodynamic designs, wider track widths and larger racing tyres.

BMW entered Group 5 competition with a dedicated racing version of its E21 320, based on its flagship road model. The car featured dramatically flared guards integrated into a revised aerodynamic body, along with a powerful 300hp engine. The E21 320 proved highly competitive in international motorsport and was campaigned by the official BMW team, while also serving as a development platform for emerging young drivers.
