The name is a little piece of railway history. "Lining" is the coach painter's craft of picking out fine decorative lines along boiler bands, coach sides and splashers — and colours carrying "Lining" in the Humbrol range descend from that tradition: shades intended for detail-line and livery work rather than broad panels. No. 82 is the orange of that family — a warm, matt orange that earns its keep wherever fine, high-visibility detail needs painting. When a paint guide calls for "82", this is the tin.

Detail Work First

Its heritage job is railway livery detail — lining, lettering backgrounds, buffer-beam adjacent trim and the small orange touches that lift a locomotive or coach side — and matt is the right sheen for detail that should read crisply without catching the light. Beyond the railway, matt orange is the standard for high-visibility and safety details across modelling: machinery markings, commercial vehicle panels, life rings and buoyancy gear on boats, hazard striping on dioramas, and aerial-recognition panels on military subjects. A note for livery perfectionists: this is Humbrol's shade, and heritage railway lining colours are famously contested territory — check against your reference for a specific company's livery rather than assuming a match.

Classic Solvent-Based Enamel

The traditional fast-drying Humbrol formula: high-density pigment, strong coverage — valuable in an orange, a colour family notorious for weak opacity in lesser paints — and a durable matt film. It adheres to most plastics, wood, glass, ceramics, metal, cardboard and sealed surfaces (test a small area first on anything unusual), with a 14ml tinlet covering roughly 0.3 square metres.

Brush or Airbrush

Brush straight from the tin — two thin coats beat one thick one, and for fine lining work a good pointed brush and thinned paint beat both. Airbrush thinned with Humbrol Enamel Thinners at 2 parts paint to 1 part thinner. Matt is touch dry in 20–40 minutes and hard dry within 24 hours; recoat after 6 hours minimum, preferably overnight. Clean up with Humbrol Enamel Thinners.
