Red oxide isn't a styling choice — it's what's actually under the paint on the real thing. Anti-corrosion primer in that distinctive rust-red has coated steel vehicles, ships and industrial plant for a century, and WWII German AFVs famously left the factory in it before ever seeing Dunkelgelb. Which means that when you chip a top coat back on a model primed in oxide red, what shows through is exactly what would show through on the real vehicle. No guessing, no painting fake chips in a brown you mixed by eye.

That makes this the default base for weathered armour. Lay it down, apply your top coat over chipping fluid or hairspray, then work it back at the wear points — hatch rims, fenders, the ground-off edges where crews climbed aboard — and the effect does itself. It also does quiet work under colour: browns, rust tones, dark yellows and warm reds all read richer over oxide red than they do over grey. And being part of Tamiya's Fine line, it atomises finely enough to keep weld beads, cast texture, zimmerit and rivet detail crisp — the things you primed the model to show off in the first place.

  • Authentic factory primer colour for chipping and weathering effects
  • Richer, warmer tone under browns, rust shades and dark yellows
  • Ultra-fine atomisation preserves weld beads, cast texture and rivets
  • 180ml — enough for a full hull, turret and running gear
  • Bonds to ABS, polystyrene, resin and metal; sands wet or dry

Tip: The mistake is covering it evenly and forgetting it's there. Plan the wear pattern before you spray the top coat — decide which edges and panels get worn back — and the oxide red does most of the storytelling for you.

Which primer do I need? Oxide red is a purpose-built base for armour and weathered subjects. For a neutral base on anything else, use grey — 87042 for faster coverage and filling, Fine 87064 for small scales and delicate detail. Use white 87044 under bright yellows and whites, pink 87146 under bright reds and figure flesh tones, and clear Metal Primer 87061 on bare metal parts first.
