At 42,343 t, the Bismarck was the largest and most modern battleship in the world (besides the Hood). On May 24, 1941, she and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen sank the largest British battle cruiser, the Hood, with a direct hit on the pack ice border off Greenland with the 5th salvo of her 38 cm guns. Launched by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg on February 14, 1940, together with the structurally identical Tirpitz, she was the most modern ship and the prestige object of the German Navy. With a length of 251 m, the mast tip reached up to 52 m above the water surface. A total of 17,450 tons of steel were used as armor protection. The newly designed heavy artillery fired 800 kg projectiles up to a distance of 34.2 km, penetrating 350 mm armor up to 21 km. While the Prinz Eugen was not hit in the battle on May 24, the Bismarck, damaged in the bow, set course for a French port. In the subsequent pursuit by British ships and planes, the ship was shot down after a torpedo hit in the rudder system on May 27, 1941 by numericaly superior forces of the Home Fleet and sank in the Atlantic around 800 km off the French coast. Of 2,092 men on board, 115 survived. Gunned down by a superior number of Home Fleet forces on May 1, 1941, she sank in the Atlantic about 800 km off the French coast.
