A primer keys the surface. A surfacer fills it. Mr. Surfacer goes on with enough body to swallow sanding scratches, faint seam lines and the ghost of a mould mark, then sands back to a genuinely flat surface — the difference between a finish that looks painted and one that looks moulded. The 1000 grade is the all-rounder: fine enough to preserve panel lines and rivets, coarse enough to actually fill something.

The white version solves a specific problem. Dark plastic — the deep blues, reds and blacks that Gunpla runners and car kits are full of — drinks colour and shifts it, so your top coat comes out muddy no matter how many passes you make. A white base stops the plastic showing through, restores vibrancy, and gives even coverage across parts moulded in three different colours. And at 170ml this is Mr. Hobby's value-size can, roughly 70% more than their standard 100ml sprays, which is the difference between priming one kit and priming three.

  • Fills sanding scratches, seam lines and minor blemishes as it primes
  • White base restores colour vibrancy over dark or multi-coloured plastic
  • 1000 grade — fills well without burying panel lines and fine detail
  • Sands back smooth, wet or dry, for a flawless painting surface
  • 170ml value-size can — 70% more than a standard 100ml spray

Tip: Don't flood the whole model to fix one flaw. Prime everything in light passes, then go back and lay a slightly heavier pass over just the seam or scratch, let it cure properly, and sand that spot back flush. Spot-filling keeps detail sharp everywhere else.

Understanding the numbers: Mr. Surfacer's grade is its coarseness. 500 is the heavy filler for gouges and bad seams. 1000 is the standard working grade — the one most builds want. 1500 is the fine finishing grade for a final coat under gloss and metallic paints, where any texture at all will show. Lower number, more filling; higher number, smoother finish.

Which one do I need? Choose white when the plastic underneath is dark or multi-coloured, and under bright top coats. Grey Surfacer 1000 (B-505) is the neutral choice for light-coloured plastic and for spotting flaws, which show up better against grey. If you want a base that keys the surface without filling, a plain surface primer is the lighter-touch option. For bare metal parts, prime those first with Metal Primer (B-504).
