Its roots trace back to the Beechcraft 95 Travel Air, which combined the Bonanza fuselage with tail surfaces inspired by the T-34 Mentor military trainer. As competition in the light twin market increased during the late 1950s and early 1960s, Beechcraft responded by developing a true twin-engine variant of the Bonanza. The result was the Model 55 Baron, introduced in 1961, featuring twin six-cylinder engines, refined nacelles, and the swept vertical stabiliser of the Debonair. Since then, the Baron has remained near the top of the light aircraft class.

For glow power enthusiasts, an optional GP conversion kit is available separately (VQA157/GP), including fuel tanks and engine mounts suited for .25 to .32 size 2-stroke engines.
