Smart Charging TechnologyWhen connected to a Spektrum Smart Battery, unique parameters and health of your LiPo battery upload from the Smart memory microchip integrated into the battery. Mediocre & outdated entry level Smart charger
23 April 2024I dislike Spektrum Smart batteries. I feel their limited & superficial benefits do not outweigh locking you into their ecosystem. I decided to purchase this charger as I had accumulated a few Smart batteries in RTR bundles and had no way of charging them and utilising their Smart features. I do have a Spektrum S120 charger (included in aforementioned bundles) which is a basic USB-C charger that takes hours to charge a small 2S Lipo and doesn't grant you access to any additional features, one vital one being placing the battery on a storage charge. This S1200 DC charger is the cheapest way into the Spektrum Smart battery ecosystem providing you have a suitable external power supply. Bits of info I wanted to know before purchase and found difficult to find answers to: - It comes updated to the latest firmware version (3.1.0.13) making it compatible with G1 and G2 batteries. This is a good thing as updating the charger requires a proprietary cable which is discontinued and difficult to find. - It includes a short power cable, that being an IC3 Female connector to male bullet connectors. It's limited to 200W which is pretty low given its price and the fact that it's externally powered however it's definitely enough to charge a single battery quickly. It tops out at 8.0A for a 6S Lipo. It has a decent enough screen and interface, showing you all the information you need including internal resistance of each cell. The scroll wheel which you use to navigate menus is horrible though, a simple UP and DOWN button would have been a better choice. As a charger for standard non Spektrum Lipos it's fine. It has some quirks though such as it doesn't auto detect cell count based upon the balance lead until you start the charging process. It can takes hours to storage charge as it sits on the final 0.1V for hours, which is a strange bug as it doesn't do this on the normal charging mode. It has a maximum discharge rste of 0.2A. It supports all the Spektrum Smart battery features with one exception. It has a menu option to UPDATE your Smart battery which didn't work for any of my Smart batteries, it simply states 'UPDATE FAILED'. The worst thing about this is it can potentially brick your battery as there's no way to back out of this screen. Even if you power off the charger and disconnect the battery, as soon as you reconnect the battery and power on the charger it forces you back to the update battery screen with no way to exit. You will be stuck in this loop unless you connect your battery to a different Spektrum Smart charger which resets the battery and allows it to work again. A good basic charger that costs more than it should but will serve you well provided you need a cheap option to charge Smart batteries, access their settings and features and have an external power supply. I would not recommend this charger if you don't want to charge Spektrum Smart batteries and don't have a suitable external power supply to run it.
